Barry Beach Clean Sunday 22nd October at 10.00am

Friends of Barry Buddon – Beach Clean-up

All of us fortunate enough to live in Carnoustie enjoy a glorious sandy beach which, to the West, sadly ends at the Barry Burn. Coastal erosion preventative measures, using shoreline hardening by the use of stone revetments, continues as far as Barry Ness on the outer Tay Estuary.

Hidden from view from Carnoustie is the magnificent beach that runs from Barry Ness to Monifieth. Home to a wide variety of birds, for much of the year access to this beach is restricted because of live firing on the Barry Buddon ranges. As a result, a considerable amount of flotsam and jetsam is washed up on the beach which needs to be collected and removed. This includes some wonderfully bleached and sculpted driftwood. To this end, a beach clean-up is organised annually and sponsored by the Monifieth Rotary Club, who need as many people as they can to assist. Volunteers from Carnoustie are being invited to take part in this worthwhile venture. If anyone is willing to give up a couple of hours of their time, they are invited to arrive at the Barry Buddon Training Centre car park at 1000hrs on Sunday 22nd October 2017.

To reach the car park from Carnoustie follow the main A 930 road to Monifieth and turn left in the town centre following the signs for Barry Buddon. Immediately having passed through the railway underpass turn left again and follow the road (which runs alongside the railway) to the Training Centre car park. Here a briefing will be given before volunteers are led in their cars to the beach area.

The event, which would be suitable for both families and individuals, offers a wonderful opportunity to walk along the fantastic but usually inaccessible Barry Sands, whilst at the same time providing invaluable assistance to the Barry Buddon Training Centre in their conservation efforts, by collecting rubbish on the way. Normally the event lasts around two hours but naturally volunteers may leave whenever it suits. Do think about joining in – your contribution would be most welcome.
